Does Winter Affect LED Outdoor Lighting?

Humble, United States - November 16, 2022 / Texas Rainmakers /

LEDs are an excellent option for outdoor or landscape lighting. It's more efficient, lasts longer, and can help you save money on your electric bill. Another benefit of LED lighting is that the winter barely affects them. Compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, you don't have to worry too much about special maintenance for LED lights. They'll continue to work just fine during the cold months.

How Do LED Lights Function in the Winter?

Here are some of the differences between using LED lights in the winter vs. other types:

More Efficient

In general, LED lights are more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs. This means they use less energy and last longer. During the winter, you don't have to worry about changing out bulbs as often because they're not affected by temperature changes like incandescents are.

Longer Lifespan

LEDs also tend to last longer than regular light bulbs. The lifespan of an LED bulb is usually rated at 50,000 hours or even 100,000 hours. That's 10 times longer than a typical incandescent bulb.

In the winter, you may have to turn on your lights for a long time because it gets dark earlier. This can be a problem once your lights start burning out. But if you've got LED lights, you won't have to worry about replacing them as often.

Better Lumen Output

Lumen is a measurement of how bright something is. When comparing different types of lights, lumens are one way to measure their brightness. Lights with higher lumen output are brighter.

A traditional incandescent light bulb only has 12 to 18 lumens per watt. This can be very dim compared to newer LED lights which have up to 75 to 100 lumens per watt.

This means that LED lights will be brighter than traditional bulbs. In the winter, a high lumens rating is helpful because it allows you to see better while walking outside.

No Mercury Vapor

LED lights do not contain mercury vapor. When you use traditional incandescent light bulbs in the winter, the mercury inside them is affected. Lower outdoor temperatures mean that there's lower mercury vapor pressure. This affects conventional light bulbs but not LED lights.

You don't need to worry about varying mercury pressure in the winter when you use LED lights. The light will continue to be bright and efficient despite the cold temperature. This makes it a good choice for outdoor lighting all year round.

How to Maintain LED Lighting

Although LED lights require minimal maintenance, you still have to take care of them properly. Proper care ensures that your LED lights work well all year long. Here are some tips to keep in mind when maintaining your LED lights:

  • Choose the appropriate LEDs for your needs
  • Clean your bulbs regularly to remove dust and debris
  • Read the manual before installing your lights
  • Periodically inspect your lights for any damage
