Safety Measures to Consider When Opening Your Sprinklers for Spring

Humble, United States - March 7, 2022 / Texas Rainmakers /

There's a good chance that your sprinkler system won't be needed for irrigation purposes during the winter season in Texas. If this is the case, it's best to shut down your sprinkler system and winterize it until the warmer months arrive. Once the weather starts getting warm again for spring and summer, you should know how to turn on your sprinkler system properly.

You might think that it’s just simple, that you just have to turn on the sprinklers. That’s not the case because you need to follow specific measures to ensure you open your irrigation system right. Here's how to turn on your sprinkler system after winter and in time for spring.

1. Inspect Your Sprinkler System

Before turning on your system, you should inspect all of your sprinkler system heads. Check each head to ensure that none of them are leaking or damaged. You should also check the connections between the heads and the valve box.

Some sprinkler system freeze problems occur when the connection between the heads and the valves becomes frozen together. If any of these things aren't working correctly, you should have someone repair them before turning on the system.

2. Find Your Main Valve

Once you've inspected your sprinkler heads and made sure that they're in good condition, you can proceed with finding your main valve. This valve controls water flow from the faucet into the pipes that run throughout your yard. It's usually located at the end of one of the house's exterior walls at the bottom. The main valve has a handle, which controls the water flow through the system.

3. Turn On the Water Supply

After finding your main valve, you'll want to turn on the water supply. To do so, open the valve by pulling on its handle. When you pull on the valve's handle, you'll hear the sound of water flowing through the pipes. Once you hear the water running, wait a few minutes for the water to start filling the pipelines.

4. Open Other Valves

After waiting a few minutes, you should now turn on other valves that control different parts of your garden. These include valves that control individual zones, valves that control individual sprinklers, and valves that control individual fixtures in your garden.

5. Test Your System

The next step is to tune on your sprinkler system after the winter is to test it. It includes testing each zone individually and then testing the entire system as a whole. You should see if each zone activates and runs appropriately so that your sprinkler system will effectively irrigate your yard.

6. Adjust Settings

You may need to adjust some settings to get your system working well. For example, you may need to increase the time that an individual zone stays on during the day. It prevents excess water waste and saves money. Additionally, you may need to change the watering schedule based on the climate in your area. Any damages found in the system should also be repaired immediately.
